3D Laser Scanning

3D Laser Scanning

GKS Inspection Services has been known as the standard of excellence for ultra-precise, 3D laser measurement used for inspection and reverse engineering for over 25 years.

The company’s Plymouth, MI lab is accredited by the A2LA for Mechanical Testing and Calibration and features 3D laser scanners and other inspection equipment.

3D Laser Scanning is a non-contact technology that digitally captures the shape of physical objects using laser light. Our non-contact 3D laser scanners measure fine details and capture complex geometries with an accuracy of ±.0005", to quickly generate a highly accurate surface model that represents the original design.

In 3D laser scanning, a laser probe projects a line of laser light onto a surface while cameras continuously triangulate the changing distance and shape of the laser line as it sweeps along, digitizing the object in three dimensions.

Laser triangulation is an active stereoscopic measurement technique that computes the distance of an object with a directional light source and a video camera. A laser beam is deflected from a mirror onto a scanning object.  The object scatters the light, which is then collected by a video camera located at a known triangulation distance from the laser so that the 3D spatial coordinates of a surface point or line are calculated.  The CCD camera’s 2D array captures the surface profile’s image and digitizes all data points along the laser.  3D laser scanners create a point cloud of data samples from the surface of the object from which a digital CAD model can be made.

Using Laser Design’s next-generation scanning technology and Surveyor 3D laser scanning systems, GKS provides fast (up to 750,000 points per second), ultra-precise (to ±.0005"), fully automated laser measurement capabilities for complex geometries and free-form shapes.  Surveyor systems come in a broad range of sizes for parts of all sizes, from small, intricate objects to large aerospace or automotive vehicles.

The expert metrologists at GKS Inspection Services can provide you with guaranteed results:

  • Laser scanning is fast and accurate, reducing your time to market.
  • Laser scanning measures the entire surface of your object, improving inspection and verification. It reduces the discrepancy between the as-designed part and the as-built part.
  • Laser scanning allows you to create true CAD models for FEA testing of actual geometry to correct problems before parts go into production.
  • Laser scanning can be used to validate tooling, even when no CAD model exists.

Whether comparing a physical part to its CAD model or digitizing a prototype with the intent of developing a new CAD model,  laser scanning yields high accuracy point cloud data that can be modeled and used for many purposes:

  • Tool path creation
  • Polygonal / STL meshes
  • Composite blends
  • NURBS curves
  • NURBS surfaces
  • Tooling verification
  • And many more.

The assurance of knowing your part is created to its design intent will give you a competitive advantage only GKS Inspection Services and 3D laser scanning can offer.

Your project can be ready in as little as 2-3 days and some even as quickly as overnight if needed. Results Guaranteed!
