Scanning time for the entire model was 2 hours. Conventional measuring would have taken much longer, up to 20 times longer, and the data would not have been as accurate and complete."
The customer wanted to scale up a one-of-a-kind aircraft concept model to build a large flyable remote-controlled replica. However, no CAD data or blueprints existed for the aircraft model. The complex shapes involved are very difficult if not impossible to measure and duplicate by traditional methods with any amount of accuracy. Non-contact 3D laser scanning is the fastest, most accurate, and cost effective way to create the needed CAD model to work with.
GKS metrologists laser scanned the aircraft model on the Laser Design Surveyor WS-Series system using the SLP-500 laser probe. Scanning time for the entire model was 2 hours. Over 1 million points were collected in the point cloud data. Conventional measuring would have taken much longer, up to 20 times longer, and the data would not have been as accurate and complete.
After gathering the large point cloud of profile data, general clean up was needed to produce an STL file for the customer. This process took about 1.5 hours.
