3D COLOR SCANNER TEAMS UP WITH GEOMAGIC COLOR 3D CAD

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Laser Design Inc. announced that its PS-Series 3300C  - Portable 3D Laser Scanner, now has the ability to combine color, along with 3D shape, into a single file format within Geomagic’s Studio software.  Geomagic recently added color STL support for Laser Design’s PS-Series Portable 3D / Color Scanner.  During the scanning process, color information follows shape information into the CAD environment, with RGB values for each XYZ data point collected during the scan process.  This allows 3D Scan Data with Color be used for color polygonal model (.STL) creation.

Product design applications are only one use for this process of 3D scanning. Computer-based modeling of both color and shape has proved to be a valuable tool for animation and virtual reality applications, museum archival records and human anatomy scanning.

According to Laser Design CEO Marty Schuster, “There is a growing need for color of the actual item being scanned for purposes of accuracy, analysis, design and research to be associated with the shape of the object.  “In the past, color has been associated primarily with museums and human body-related applications.  This is growing quickly into many other fields now that color scanning technology is available, he said.”

Since 1987, Laser Design Inc. has been the leading supplier of ultra-precise, 3D laser scanning systems and services used for capturing the 3D shape of objects with complex geometries and free-form surfaces.   Laser Design’s Surveyor line of automated and portable scanning systems are ideal for 3D applications such as computer-aided verification, discrete dimensional measurements, reverse engineering, rapid prototyping, and manufacturing from scan data.  The company’s patented laser line-probe technology dramatically reduces scanning time by collecting data substantially faster and more accurately than conventional metrology technologies.  The 16-year-old company also operates an in-house Service Bureau offering complete 3D scanning, modeling and inspection services.  For further information, contact Marty Schuster, by phone (952-884-9648, ext. 202), fax (952-884-9653), via email to sales@laserdesign.com
