The
4-axis, Auditory Modeling system (AM-66RR) uses dual linear and dual
rotary positioning stages to automatically scan the ear impressions in
less than a minute and output the data in a point-cloud format.
The system uses specialized software from Geomagic (www.geomagic.com)
to process the scan data and make the digital model of the ear shell,
which is then manufactured on a Rapid Prototyping machine.

Design officials are predicting that its automated scanning system will
spur the hearing aid industry towards adopting new manufacturing
technologies. The company is
also partnering with a hearing aid industry supplier to offer scanning of
ear impressions as a service.
Greg Hetzler, Product Manager for the AM-66RR, stated, “This
system will help to revolutionize the process of hearing aid
manufacturing. We expect that
the companies that use our system will be able to significantly improve
the fit of their hearing aids inside the ear canal thus reducing their
chronically high return rates and saving them money.”
Since
1987, Laser Design Inc. has been the leading supplier of ultra-precise,
laser scanning systems and services used for capturing the 3D shape of
objects with complex shapes and free-form surfaces.
Laser Design’s Surveyor automated 4 and 5-axis scanning systems
are ideal for 3D applications such as computer-aided verification,
discrete dimensional measurements, reverse engineering, rapid prototyping,
and manufacturing from scan data. The
company’s patented laser line-probe technology dramatically reduces
scanning time by collecting data substantially faster and more accurately
than conventional metrology technologies.
The 16-year-old company also operates an in-house Service Bureau
offering complete 3D scanning, modeling and inspection services.
